What is ULTRA?
Our proprietary ULTRA (ultrasound lesion therapeutic removal alternative) provides women a non-surgical option for removing benign breast lumps. This minimally-invasive procedure can remove oil cysts and hard lumps of fat using a small needle or probe to dissolve the hardened fat for a gentler approach. The device is guided by ultrasound imaging, which allows our team of breast specialists to remove fat deposits and lumps from under the skin without disturbing the healthy breast tissue or causing any damage to the surrounding area.
We perform ULTRA using local anesthesia to ensure the patient is comfortable throughout the procedure. We offer this non-surgical lumpectomy at our medical center, and patients go home the same day. You may return to work and routine, non-strenuous activities the next day.
Who is a candidate for ULTRA?
You may be a good candidate for ULTRA if you have a benign breast lump you would like to have removed. This can occur as a growth that happens naturally, or changes in the tissue from surgery or a previous breast procedure such as unsatisfactory fat grafting or another cause. A non-surgical lumpectomy procedure is only appropriate for patients with non-cancerous growths. Patients with masses that may be cancerous or become cancerous may need to undergo a fine needle aspiration biopsy, core-needle biopsy, or lumpectomy surgery to ensure the safest outcome.
What are the benefits of ULTRA?
ULTRA offers numerous benefits for the right patient. This procedure:
- Creates a more aesthetically-pleasing breast
- Eliminates need for regular monitoring for some patients
- Reduces worry over possible breast changes
- Does not require significant downtime afterward
- Minimizes post-treatment scarring
- Requires only local anesthesia
What is the procedure at our medical center like?
Our breast surgeons perform this procedure using local anesthesia, so the patient can be awake during the session. During treatment, we insert an extraction device through a small nick in the skin to minimize visible scarring afterward. We use ultrasound imaging to guide the extraction device, ensuring we can locate the targeted mass quickly.
Once we have pinpointed the lump, we will break down the mass for easier elimination. This procedure removes hardened lumps with minimal trauma to surrounding tissue, ensuring you enjoy your results with minimal discomfort and downtime after treatment. You will be able to return home soon after your procedure and most patients are back to regular activities the next day.
How long is the recovery?
Healing time for small areas is 1-2 weeks. However, larger masses can take up to four weeks to fully heal. It is important to allow time for the technique to work and for the treated area to heal before determining if more than one session is needed. For larger masses or areas, various sessions spread out into stages may be needed to achieve the best possible result.
What if you are not a candidate for ULTRA?
